Sci-fi: an example of inspiration

Think on this quote (it's from my AP hug textbook...):

"For many people the only way to enter the United States or Canada is illegally. In the latter part of the twentieth century the tradition of universal ability or migrate to North America no longer exists. Paradoxically, in an era when human beings have invented easy means of long-distance transport, the right of free migration has been replaced by human barriers."

Now, think of it as the background for a Sci-fi story. You may even want to change the dates around. Whoa!! Total change in perspective!! Now add this next quote:

"The most famous symbol of migration in the world is surely the Statue of Liberty. Its inscription, written by Emma Lazarus, includes the famous words, 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free.'...The United States no longer asks for immigration of the world's tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to be free."

....and, suddenly, it becomes an apocalyptic world in which the rich countries can no longer accept the third world countries' immigrants!! The Statue of Liberty is now a rusted (ahhh...if copper can rust) skeleton on a barnacle-encrusted island. It's no longer a symbol of hope, of freedom. It's a symbol of despair, of the closed borders to this once mighty country, ravaged by war, disease, and famine.

Whoo hoo!! A story based on Human geography!! Translation: the world has reached it's CARRYING CAPACITY, and MDCs have failed in caring for the helpless LDCs. Population, corresponding with VON THÜNEN'S MODEL, has outpaced agricultural growth. Not enough new food practices, such as INCREASING AGRICULTURAL LAND, USING MORE MACHINERY, and FINDING NEW FOOD SOURCES (I don't think I got them right--I'm not at that chapter in my reviewing yet) have been implemented, or they have failed. Because of this, countries, rich and poor alike, fight to come out at the top, where food supplies can be taken. Malnutrition, lacking conditions due to war and hunger, and the shutting down of public services (schools, hospitals, police forces) have led to not only disease, but illiteracy and huge increases in crime, as people fight for their resources. Petroleum is no longer available, for the Middle East no longer cooperates, and no one is willing to work anyways, so no automobiles are being driven. Because no one works, the level of unemployment is skyrocketing, and the citizens are missing many of their basic services. The world is doing the impossible: it's actually reversing direction and going backwards in the DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION MODEL (DTM), and has LATE FIRST STAGE CONDITIONS, with enormously high CRUDE DEATH RATES, and, though not quite as high, CRUDE BIRTH RATES (crime=rape, you know?). The world is a world of squalor, of pain, of hunger. This is Sparta!!

What? Huh? Hope you learned something from that human geo lesson...

And, to turn it into a fantasy!!:

In the midst of this chaotic, dying world, a group of magical teens emerge to fight the worldwide economic depression!!

To turn it cheesy: (actually, I kinda like the "save the environment" part. Gives a moral to the story. The cheesy part is the "save the world with the help of everyone!! (cuz everyone's just so nice like that...))

The teens, through their hard work at turning the world back to normal, fully realize their powers and capabilities, and vow to save the environment from this evil humankind!! They work together, and with the help of all their friends, family (that betrayed them before!!), and eventually the whole population of the world to reverse this downgrading of the world around them, and in the end, everyone is happy, and the magical teens grow up in a happy world, have children, and never use their powers again except for maybe growing a bunch of plants in a greenhouse or botanical garden.

Hmmm...what other genres are there?
Teen fiction!:

The magical teens are...teens, and they fall in love in spite of the horrible world around them!! (I don't write stuff like this, so...I don't have much more to write...)

Chick flick!!:

All of the magical teens are girls, and they fall in love with random boys around them while sashaying through the world!?

Ooh...I forgot about this part...people are struggling to get into the U.S? Hmm...integrate that into your story!!

This is not Copywrited...this is half cliche, half rant, I really don't mind if you use it. But if you do...please, make it more interesting, such as, add a twist or something...please, PLEASE do not turn it into the chick flick version. I will puke. ("hey-ah, I'm like, totally going to save the world today!! With my high heels sinking in the sewage outside, I'm going to raise my delicate little hand and release a cascade of sparkles to heal the earth!! And to those boys gazing at me in awe, I suppose I have to fall in love that ultra-cutie!! Oh, his long red hair falls over his face so seductively! And his eyes, that wonderfully clear shade of blue!! I so have to text him. Tell me his number!")

Haha, poor Lamair, I won't (will) torture you like that in the future. Such a sad life, such a sad life...
